The prompt deck
What do I even say to a phone?
That question is the only way an audio guestbook fails. Guests pick up, freeze at the beep, and leave you eleven seconds of "congrats, love you guys!". So we print prompts on table cards and set them beside the phone. Here are twelve from our deck of thirty-six.
For the shy ones
Small, concrete questions. Nobody freezes when they are just answering.
- Tell them the exact moment tonight you caught yourself smiling at nothing.
- Say what song just played, and whether it worked on you.
- Describe your table. Name names. Rate the conversation.
- Tell them one thing about tonight you hope they never change.
For the funny ones
Permission slips. The best comedians in your life just need a format.
- Leave a formal complaint about how good the food was.
- Give the couple advice you are in no position to give.
- Confess something small. The statute of limitations is the honeymoon.
- Predict, with total confidence, one thing about their fifth year married.
For the ones who raised you
The messages you will play in twenty years. Give them room.
- Tell them what you thought the first time you met the person they married.
- Say the thing you were too busy hugging to say in the receiving line.
- Tell a story about them from before they could talk. They cannot interrupt you here.
- Say their name the way only you say it. Then say goodnight.
